10 steps for building a strong internal communications framework

We think effective internal communication and engagement is a cornerstone for success.

Here are ten essential steps to building an effective framework that fosters transparency, boosts morale and drives productivity:

1. Conduct a communications audit:

Begin by assessing your current communications practices. Identify what's working and what's not.

2. Set clear objectives:

Define what you hope to achieve with your internal communications. This could include improving employee engagement, reducing turnover or boosting productivity.

3. Understand your audience:

Know who you are communicating with. Different departments and teams are likely to have different needs and preferences. Talk to them and find out more.

4. Choose the right channels:

Select what’s appropriate for your messages, considering both digital and physical channels and environments and establishing consistent ways of using these.

5. Develop a content strategy:

Plan and create relevant, consistent content that resonates with your audience. Ask and test out what this might be.

6. Foster two-way communication:

Encourage feedback and dialogue. Colleagues want to understand how they are heard and valued.

7. Develop the team:

Equip the team with the skills and tools they need to communicate effectively.

8. Measure and adjust:

Continuously monitor the effectiveness of your communications and be ready to adapt as needed.

9. Celebrate successes:

Acknowledge and celebrate milestones and achievements to keep the momentum going.

10. Maintain transparency:

Be open and honest in your communications to build trust and credibility.
